The decibel (dB) is one tenth of a BEL (named in honor of Alexander Graham Bell. The bel is seldom used without the deci- prefix.) It is the smallest difference that a human ear can detect between two different sounds. The decibel has no actual numeric value, but is used to express a ratio between two powers. It is a logrithmic scale.
