The signal loss resulting from the insertion of a component, or link, or channel, between a transmitter and receiver (often referred to as attenuation).
In Fiber Optic systems, optical power loss that results from a splice or from inserting a device (such as a connector or a coupler) into a previously continuous transmission path. Insertion Loss = Power entering the device (in dB) – Power exiting the device (in dB)
